Telethon Audio Samples - Friday 2005 |
• Listen to how positive and upbeat each programmer is when talking about the fundraiser. • Listen to the types of things they talk about and how they talk about them. Write down what you might "borrow" to talk about. • Ask yourself how YOU might say something similar. Write down your answers. • Ask yourself how YOU might say something a bit differently. Write down your answers. |

Friday 2005 | BPRN | Zaire | #01 | 3:24 | Download | Introduced his telethon show with a brief overview, this is the chance to give back to WRUW for our 365 days a year. Listed premium levels and some specific CDs to entice his listeners; also mentioned the operators standing by. Very upbeat and enthusiastic, which was helped by the James Brown in the background. |
Friday 2005 | BPRN | Zaire | #02 | 1:57 | Download | Quick break, mentioned that he'd have more telethon stuff later on. Also some jokes, but not jabbing specifically at it. |
Friday 2005 | BPRN | Zaire | #03 | 3:22 | Download | Mentioned that we do it once a year (vs. PBS), that we play stuff you won't hear on other stations. Listed premiums, focusing on clothes and glasses, mentioned tax-deductibility. Mentioned that telethon funds are 52% of our budget, expounded briefly on why we program at WRUW. More James Brown in the background, kept it lively. |
Friday 2005 | BPRN | Zaire | #04 | 2:44 | Download | Quick, mainly mentioned that it was telethon and listed a few premiums (2 CDs he was highlighting, for example). More music in the background. |
Friday 2005 | BPRN | Zaire | #05 | 2:55 | Download | After listing what he had just played, did another telethon overview: telephone number, listing some benefits (e.g. unique music, our free concerts), and listing some premiums. Music in the background, not quite as upbeat. |
Friday 2005 | BPRN | Zaire | #06 | 0:48 | Download | Very quick, left out a digit in phone number (216 36 2208) unfortunately. Mentioned our range/wattage and that such upgrades are possible because of listener donations. |
Friday 2005 | BPRN | Zaire | #07 | 3:28 | Download | Opened and closed with phone number; mentioned that we play what we want and not what some computer or corporation says, which also helps new and struggling artists. Did seem to imply that we needed the help to keep broadcasting, though. After the main message, he and a guest were sort of screwing around, but it was funny, and didn't detract. |
Friday 2005 | BPRN | Zaire | #08 | 2:09 | Download | Focused a bit more on the donation amounts, e.g. no amount is too small, but at the other end, $100 would allow a donor to take over his show one week. Gave phone number twice, but left out the 8 again the first time. Gave no specific reasons to contribute, however. Prince in the background. |
Friday 2005 | BPRN | Zaire | #09 | 0:48 | Download | No mention of telethon at all, mainly a break between music. |

Friday 2005 | Radio Killed the Video Star | Rich and Autumn | #01 | 2:53 | Download | Intro and overview of telethon and procedure; mentioned phone number at start, middle, end. WRUW is commercial-free and local. Listed some premiums, including a CD they kicked off the show with. |
Friday 2005 | Radio Killed the Video Star | Rich and Autumn | #02 | 6:42 | Download | Nice long plea. Phone number at least 4 times throughout, many groups they played or plan to play are available as CD or concert ticket premiums. They also spoke about being commercial-free, our large library, program variety, increased dependency on telethon in the budget, new studio (woo!), and a brief mention of the economic principles of donation (e.g. marginal utility - go education). |
Friday 2005 | Radio Killed the Video Star | Rich and Autumn | #03 | 8:00 | Download | Pretty long. Phone number also 4 times here, but it was a bit rambling at times. Mentions of non-commercial, local, volunteers; this is your opportunity to help out. Anecdotes from both Rich and Autumn about commercial radio (repeated playlists, making requests). Almost everything they're playing is a music premium; brief discussion also of clothes and glasses. |
Friday 2005 | Radio Killed the Video Star | Rich and Autumn | #04 | 6:44 | Download | Rather rambling and unstructured this time. They mentioned that some of the premiums have been going, which is nice. General selling point is that WRUW is better than other stations; also mentioned that you can donate on the website. |
Friday 2005 | Radio Killed the Video Star | Rich and Autumn | #05 | 7:16 | Download | Mentions of 24/7/365 operation, our range, webcast, archive. After some time spent on playlist, mentioned that listeners can donate later in the week, and cash, check, and credit can be used. |
Friday 2005 | Radio Killed the Video Star | Rich and Autumn | #06 | 4:54 | Download | A bit of a recap, but not much else telethon-related. Some mentions of what premiums can be or could have been gotten. |

Friday 2005 | The Flaming Jalopy | Tom and Tony | #01 | 1:47 | Download | Kind of sleepy (it was 4 am), brief introduction to the telethon and some premiums. No phone number. |
Friday 2005 | The Flaming Jalopy | Tom and Tony | #02 | 2:52 | Download | Briefly mentioned why we're better than commercial stations, listed some premiums but not price levels. Gave phone number. Taking sort of a jokingly negative/apologetic attitude to having to ask for money, which could be bad or not too bad. Mentioned that this show will be sort of a "greatest hits" of past episodes, so listeners get a good idea what they play. |
Friday 2005 | The Flaming Jalopy | Tom and Tony | #03 | 6:12 | Download | Rather rambling and not all telethon related. Mentions of how telethon funds aren't required for station to stay alive, and what premiums are available. Autumn also showed up and spoke a little during this break. |
Friday 2005 | The Flaming Jalopy | Tom and Tony | #04 | 7:58 | Download | An attempt at a more serious plea. Phone number given a few times, mentions of CD premiums, benefits of our programmers. Silly still, but this seems to be in accordance with their show in general. Amusingly mentioned they hoped no higher-ups were listening, but they didn't know El Caban would be organizing this project! |
Friday 2005 | The Flaming Jalopy | Tom and Tony | #05 | 10:19 | Download | Quite rambling again. Started off with the quarter analogy, a list of premiums, and phone number. Sort of broke down after that, unfortunately. This runtime also includes a brief safe harbor cart and promo. |
Friday 2005 | The Flaming Jalopy | Tom and Tony | #06 | 7:49 | Download | A little more focus on the telethon. Mentions of our new, unique, diverse programming. List of premiums and their donation levels, and phone number given several times. |
Friday 2005 | The Flaming Jalopy | Tom and Tony | #07 | 6:47 | Download | First half not telethon-related. Some points made about telethon money helping to get us new music, that our library has rare music you often can't get, and that we have a web archive. |
Friday 2005 | The Flaming Jalopy | Tom and Tony | #08 | 2:57 | Download | Short break between sets, mentioned telethon and phone number, and that's about it. |
Friday 2005 | The Flaming Jalopy | Tom and Tony | #09 | 2:29 | Download | Just a break to introduce a song, with telethon mentioned in passing (the song is so great you should donate). |
Friday 2005 | The Flaming Jalopy | Tom and Tony | #10 | 8:40 | Download | A little better, after someone('s mom) made a donation. List of premiums again, no real reasons given to donate, but an amusing and specific lampooning of WVIZ's telethons. Ends with a promo and discussion of what's coming up next. |
Friday 2005 | The Flaming Jalopy | Tom and Tony | #11 | 2:06 | Download | Brief interlude to talk about their music, but phone number for donation given at end. |
Friday 2005 | The Flaming Jalopy | Tom and Tony | #12 | 5:06 | Download | A thank-you for donating, phone number, and list of premiums. Then, oddly, a recap of how they had been begging throughout the show, which served as a decent (packed) plea in itself. |

Friday 2005 | Your Serpentine Pad | Tom | #01 | 2:42 | Download | General introduction to telethon, what the money is used for, some time spent on SAR, and some selected premiums listed. Soothing background music suitable for 7 am. A little heavy on the phone number. |
Friday 2005 | Your Serpentine Pad | Tom | #02 | 3:52 | Download | Mentions of our budget, equipment upgrades (and wattage increase). Listed pint glasses as a premium, mentioned that donations can be made online. Phone number still a bit often (once ended in "228" also). More calm background music. |
Friday 2005 | Your Serpentine Pad | Tom | #03 | 3:58 | Download | More background music. Mentioned that one group he played was available as a premium, gave some reasons we rock (cool, non-ordinary music, public affairs shows, non-commercial), said any donation is good, and listed clothing premiums. Easing up on the phone number. |
Friday 2005 | Your Serpentine Pad | Tom | #04 | 0:25 | Download | Brief break in between songs to thank some listeners (by name) for donating, and toss out phone number. |
Friday 2005 | Your Serpentine Pad | Tom | #05 | 4:46 | Download | Mentioned donation totals from stonecoldbikini, listed several other WRUW shows similar to his that the listeners might also enjoy. Some notes about our extensive library and willingness to take requests. Many of his songs on this show are available as premiums. |
Friday 2005 | Your Serpentine Pad | Tom | #06 | 0:31 | Download | Another brief break for station ID and to mention telethon and phone number. |
Friday 2005 | Your Serpentine Pad | Tom | #07 | 5:44 | Download | A bit phone-number-heavy at the start. Comparisons of WRUW to satellite radio, mentions of our webcast and archives. Also mentioned that this is the one week a year we do this, that we can fund SAR with the money to thank the listeners, and that donations can be made on the web. A list of non-music premiums ends it. |
Friday 2005 | Your Serpentine Pad | Tom | #08 | 5:40 | Download | Thank-yous to several donors interspersed throughout, as well as an update that one premium is gone. Jackie (of She's Your Cocaine) joins him in the studio to talk about what the telethon means to her (as her first one). Another list of premiums follows. (Note: Isn't "A" in Studio-A-Rama pronounced like a long "A" and not a schwa?) |
Friday 2005 | Your Serpentine Pad | Tom | #09 | 4:52 | Download | Comparisons to commercial radio (commercials, more music fewer hits, the various styles we play), mention that it's only this one week for the whole year, more premiums listed. |
Friday 2005 | Your Serpentine Pad | Tom | #10 | 0:45 | Download | Another brief break to thank a donor (Christine, actually) and give the phone number. |
Friday 2005 | Your Serpentine Pad | Tom | #11 | 0:31 | Download | Interjects during a song (at the 110-minute mark) that he will match any donations in the last ten minutes dollar for dollar, to reach his goal of $400. |
Friday 2005 | Your Serpentine Pad | Tom | #12 | 1:37 | Download | Mentions the matching again, what some premiums are, and how to donate. Quick, no particular mentions of why to give. |
Friday 2005 | Your Serpentine Pad | Tom | #13 | 1:21 | Download | Final recap, $50 are coming out of his pocket in matching donations already, last chance to have him match. General thanks to his donors as well. |
Friday 2005 | Traditions and Transitions | Flannery | #01 | 1:14 | Download | Brief mention of telethon, with phone number and warning that he'd be talking about it. No pleas yet. |

Friday 2005 | Traditions and Transitions | Flannery | #02 | 3:12 | Download | Phone number given a few times, mention of a show-specific $100 premium. Shared a short anecdote about how he realized that the radio "speaks to you" and is your Friend. Wrapped up with a comparison to price of Plain Dealer. |
Friday 2005 | Traditions and Transitions | Flannery | #03 | 3:02 | Download | Brief mention of telethon, followed by LPT notice, a PSA, and underwriting. Mentioned that one of his previous songs was available as a premium, and listed the various pledge levels and their premiums. No specific pleas. |
Friday 2005 | Traditions and Transitions | Flannery | #04 | 1:12 | Download | Took a break during a set to thank three listeners for pledging. Mentioned the types of shows we have that might appeal to listeners/be reason to donate, as well as the spectrum of programmers at WRUW. |
Friday 2005 | Traditions and Transitions | Flannery | #05 | 1:00 | Download | Another brief one. Gave the phone number and listed two high-level premiums, but didn't give much in the way of reasons to donate. |
Friday 2005 | Traditions and Transitions | Flannery | #06 | 0:53 | Download | Basically mentioned the phone number and gave a general idea of what we use the telethon money for (accurate enough). |
Friday 2005 | Traditions and Transitions | Flannery | #07 | 0:59 | Download | Thanked another donor, prepared to wrap up. Did mention that listeners can donate at any time (not to feel restricted to a certain show), or at wruw.org. No particular reasons given again. |

Friday 2005 | Democracy Now! | Ian | #01 | 1:37 | Download | Since this show is prerecorded/PA, this is a little different. Ian, the babysitter for it, introduced the show, and the telethon, with a brief overview of how to donate and what some premiums are. Mentioned that he'd be interrupting every so often to talk more about the telethon. Also has a guest (and donor) to help out. |
Friday 2005 | Democracy Now! | Ian, with Amy Goodman | #02 | 18:39 | Download | Amy Goodman, host of Democracy Now!, actually broadcasted live by phone to make a plea for the telethon. This was her first time doing so, and as such, she tended to ramble and repeat _quite_ a bit. She mentioned the phone number many times, as well as a special DN-related premium, and though she did repeat herself a lot, the actual plea felt very natural, since the manner of show it is lends itself well to asking listeners to help a station that broadcasts it. Later, she asked Ian for a few updates on who was calling in, and indeed several people had been donating. Interestingly, one of the things she mentioned was the coffee analogy. It was a little unfortunate, but I was greatly amused when Ian was in the other room getting an update while she was talking, and failed to hear a one minute warning on (what I assume was) his phone card; she suddenly got cut off and he had no idea why, then as he was wrapping up the phone-disconnect sound and a busy signal were heard. Oh well, but at least it ended. |
Friday 2005 | Democracy Now! | Ian | #03 | 0:50 | Download | Brief wrap-up, listing several donors, suggesting other shows to listen and donate to, and giving the phone number once more. |

Friday 2005 | Metal Tortures | Sebastian | #01 | 2:34 | Download | Overview of telethon, including an introduction to it, touching on the fact that premiums are available, what the money goes toward, and of course a few mentions of the phone number. Instructed callers to ask the operators what the various premiums and pledge levels are, but did mention a few (a CD he played that was available, some show-specific ones). |
Friday 2005 | Metal Tortures | Sebastian | #02 | 1:57 | Download | Spent most of this break focusing on premiums. He was playing many things that were available as music premiums; also listed some of the non-music ones, but again asked callers to find out most of the details from the operators. Gave the phone number a few times. No real reasons given why listeners should donate. |
Friday 2005 | Metal Tortures | Sebastian | #03 | 4:13 | Download | Still no reasons to donate, but perhaps metal fans just don't need any? Instead, there was a looooong list of CDs that were available as premiums, some of which he was playing. Logo premiums were also mentioned, as well as the phone number, near the end. He kept saying that the CDs were at a $30 pledge level, which probably confused and annoyed some donors upon calling in. |
Friday 2005 | Metal Tortures | Sebastian | #04 | 3:01 | Download | Started with a prerecorded telethon promo. Went on to list more music and a few other premiums, and gave the phone number. This clip also exemplifies some of the long stretches of dead air that the host is apparently prone to; with that and the lack of impetus to give, as a listener I wouldn't be inclined to donate. |
Friday 2005 | Metal Tortures | Sebastian | #05 | 3:03 | Download | This is getting very repetitive. All the same info as before: phone number, some premiums listed, including his special one that never got taken. No reasons at all to give. Though he said that adding a CD as an additional premium was indeed $20 earlier in the show, now he says $15; altogether, it sounds as if he was working off 2003 or earlier figures and had not gone to a HTB session recently either. |
Friday 2005 | Metal Tortures | Sebastian | #06 | 3:56 | Download | A little better. In addition to the standard list of non-music premiums and a few CDs, he did reiterate (in slightly more detail than the first clip) where some of the money goes: adding to the library, upgrading equipment, the new board. As he was preparing for his next set, an operator came in to inform him that a "Goatman" had pledged $75 for one of his special premiums, so perhaps this approach works after all. Unfortunately, he continued the $30/15 mistake. |
Friday 2005 | Metal Tortures | Sebastian | #07 | 2:46 | Download | Mostly more of the same; however, he attempted to sweeten one of his special premiums by offering to get a CD autographed by the band. Also did mention that the telethon is just once a year, but it seemed out of place. |
Friday 2005 | Metal Tortures | Sebastian | #08 | 1:25 | Download | Another brief list of the non-music premiums, plus he exhorted listeners to go for his special concert ticket premiums. Was still playing various tracks from music premiums. |
Friday 2005 | Metal Tortures | Sebastian | #09 | 0:41 | Download | A wrap-0up of sorts, giving listeners one last chance to go for his special premiums. I can only imagine that it didn't work out. |
