“Effective fund raisers are not fast-talking salespeople trying to bring a quick buck to the institution. They are people who share and convey a deep belief in the merit and worth of the organization they represent ... You have to believe that your institution makes a difference.”

Jerold Panas
“Born to Raise: What Makes a Great Fund Raiser”

Thanks to the generosity of our listeners during past fundraisers, we were able to purchase over $15,000 worth of new equipment to
improve WRUW’s sound in the 2003-2004 fiscal year.

Please thank our listeners for making all of these purchases possible. Their money was put to very good use.

Equipment Purchased in 2003-2004

Six (6) Denon professional broadcast CD decks (2 for each studio, plus 2 for backup reserve). These units replaced aging versions of similar decks that had developed serious playback problems. We were also able to equip our production studio with decks for the first time in 2 years. And, we were able to buy 2 extra decks to have on-hand for replacement as needed.

Four (4) CD/Cassette combination decks. (2 for each studio) These units allow us to play cassettes on-air and use the decks as backup CD players as necessary. These new versions are broadcast-compatible units with remote start capabilities that replaced units didn’t have remotes nor
audio wiring for professional environments.

Three (3) CD players for listening stations so our staff can preview music before airplay.

Two (2) professional-grade turntables for use in the main broadcast studio. This is the first time these turntables were replaced in over 5 years. This allowed us to move older, problematic turntables out of regular use and to provide better sound quality and reliability on-air.

Four (4) new turntable preamps (2 for each studio). Replaced preamps that were approximately 15 years old. Now our records sound much better over the air.

Two (2) new Studio Microphones (1 for each studio). Replaced broken microphones and moved broken microphones out for use as parts.

One (1) Portable Digital Recorder. Gives us the ability to capture interviews out and around the Cleveland area.

One (1) internet amplifier. Boosted the signal of our internet feed to all of our listeners who listen over the internet or like to download archived shows.

One (1) broadcast delay. To keep up with recent obscenity actions by the FCC, and to use during talk shows and other live performances such as StudioArama.

One (1) microphone mixer for Production Studio. This little mixer gives us the ability to record small groups of musicians, and to host panel discussions and talk shows in Studio A.

One (1) new microphone processing unit for our production studio. This will help provide a more consistent sound to our on-air staff as they switch between studios.

Six (6) new telephones. We were down to 2 working phones for the entire station! Now we have the ability to handle calls better, as well as provide WRUW-on-hold. (Music on hold to be added within the month.)

Several pairs of reliable headphones for use throughout the station.

Repairs to various transmission equipment such as recalibration of our new STL link, upgrades to our transmitter controls to work with the new STL, and repairs to our EAS unit.

Engineering expenses for installation of various transmission equipment such as the new STL link, transmitter controls and weekly engineering expenses.

... and many other little repair items (rack screws, a cable tester, and other such items) that are important to us ... but may not be so important to listeners.

Equipment for Live From Cleveland

For the first time in several years, our live music crew was able to purchase new equipment to ease the production of our live music shows like Live from Cleveland, the Hessler Street Fair, and StudioArama.

This year, the live music crew purchased:

Six (6) new microphones. A wide variety of mics including vocal mics, and acoustic-music mics to more accurately capture the sounds of vocals and music.

Eight (8) new mic stands. Replacement of 15-20 year old broken stands that were being held together by duct tape.

One (1) portable powered mixing console. This new mixing console allows the crew to easily create special “monitor mixes” for performers without the need for a separate amplifier. In addition, it can be used for live WRUW events.

Two (2) rolling equipment cases. These equipment cases make it easier to move equipment as necessary to different venues.

One (1) new microphone compressor unit. This unit helps the live music crew more accurately control microphone sound levels in live music situations.

Twelve (12) new sound cables. Replacement of cables that were approximately 20 years old.

As you do your telethon show this year, please thank our listeners for making all of these purchases possible. Their money was put to very good use.
