Thanks to the
generosity of our listeners during past fundraisers, we have been able to
purchase over $40,000 worth of new equipment to improve WRUW’s sound during the 2005-2006 fiscal year. As you do your telethon show this year, please thank our listeners for
making all of these purchases possible. Their money was put to very good The most obvious thing we did with Radiothon SupportWe built a new air studio. (Duh.) We designed a completely new room, had custom furniture built, and installed many new pieces of equipment. All wiring and equipment installation was done by our volunteer staff. We also re-equipped the production studio with new technology. For the first time in about 15 years, both studios use the exact same technology and are 100% compatible and interchangeable. Equipment Purchased in 2005-2006Twelve (12) Axia Audio devices to completely equip two studios for the 21st century. The two new Axia Element mixing consoles were "donated" in exchange for us serving as a beta test site for the consoles. We purchased all of the other necessary interconnection equipment (audio "nodes" as they are called), to the tune of $31,000. Four (4) Marantz professional broadcast CD decks. These units replaced broken decks that have developed serious playback problems. Three of these new machines were put into the new air studio. One was put into Studio B. One (1) HHB CD burner for the air studio. This professional CD mastering system gives us the flexibility to record live to CD in the air studio. This has been useful for recording bands who perform in Studio A as well as for recording Public Affairs programs. Two (2) new Studio Microphones (for Studio C). Brand new mics for the Mic #1 and Mic #2 positions in the new studio. These Shure SM7B mics are our "WRUW standard" microphone. Two (2) Microphone Processors for Studio C. These units help improve the sound quality of the microphones. Now all microphones in the station are hooked to similar equipment and we have a consistent "vocal sound" on air. One (1) Shure VP88 specialized stereo microphone. The intent of this microphone is to help you (our staff) present in-studio performances worth listening to. This microphone features an adjustable stereo "image", thereby giving us flexibility in how we capture the sound of small music ensembles, solo artists and other performers who visit our station. Two (2) stereo microphone preamps for the stereo microphones. Each studio received one preamp for use with the stereo mics. These units provide the needed amplification to the mic signal so it can be used in the mixing system. Two (2) stereo-mic compressor units to shape the sound out of the stereo microphones in each studio. These units help eliminate background noise, and enhance the sound from each mic. Two (2) Lexicon digital effects units. These units were installed with the expectation they would be used to provide reverbs, echos, and other effects to mics used during in-studio performances by musicians. One unit was installed in each of our two studios. Two (2) licenses for WaveCart software. This software system makes it easier for us to broadcast pre-recorded announcements of all types. WaveCart replaced WinAmp and has given us much more flexibility, with countdown and countup displays, the ability to store related messages in separate folders, and the ability to "program" a series of recorded announcements in any sequence. Several pairs of reliable headphones for use throughout the station. ... and many other little repair items and wiring needs for the new studio that are important to us ... but may not be so important to listeners. As you do your telethon show this year, please thank our listeners for making all of these purchases possible. Their money was put to very good use ... very good use.
